âWhereâs he going?â I asked.
Jason ran outside. âI donât know. He said heâd wait. He doesnât normally drive like that, either.â
âProbably because the ghost inside of him doesnât know how to drive, so heâs trying to tap into Felixâs memory to learn,â said Javi.
âThey can do that?â I said.
âDo what?â said Jason.
Wow, ghost conversations were confusing when other people were around. It made me appreciated Edie and Ben even more. I missed them so much.
But I needed to help the Ritters. They had to be my focus.
âItâs a theory, but a relatively untested one,â Javi clarified. âBy me, anyway. Looks like our guy Felix is giving it a go, though.â
Well wasnât that just a great time to test how much control the ghost had over Felixâs body?
âWhat is going on?â said Jason.
I glanced over at Javi, then to Gabe, whoâd followed us into the hallway. Javi shrugged.
âSo my dead husband is also here â he helps out sometimes, even though heâs not supposed toââ Javi smirked at my admission ââand he thinks that the ghost possessing your husband is trying to tap into Felixâs memories to basically learn how to drive.â
Jason put his hand to his forehead. âOh god. My kids are in that car!â
He grabbed his phone from his coat pocket. There was a text on it. âMy eldest, Alyssa, says that Felix got really annoyed and just drove off, and now heâs mumbling to himself. Sheâs really scared. She may be smart but sheâs only eight. My son is only five.â
âIâll go keep an eye on them,â said Javi, disappearing before I could argue.
âMy husband is going to keep an eye on them.â
âWhat good can a ghost do! No offence to your husband.â He looked around as if apologising to the air.
âHe can do more than you think.â And that was my concern, since he wasnât supposed to get involved. No ghost was once theyâd crossed over. I had to intervene before Javi did too much and got himself into trouble. I had no idea what the consequences of him getting involved were, but I didnât want to, either. There were restrictions and rules in place for a reason. Not that Javi had ever been a fan of either.
It wasnât his problem to fix, though. Itâd been my fault for not noticing something was wrong sooner.
âCome on, weâll follow them in my car,â I said.
Jason quickly locked the house as I dove for my car and turned on the engine. Gabe slid into the back, too. I wasnât sure how far heâd be able to travel with us, since he haunted the house and Felix, but I didnât say anything. He was pretty visible, which meant he was one of the stronger ghosts Iâd dealt with, but that didnât always mean he could travel long distances.
Jason clutched his phone as if it was his only life force. âAlyssa says theyâre on the bypass, heading back into Hucknall.â
âAnd I take it he isnât driving at the speed limit?â
âIs he even going to understand what the speed signs mean? How old is this ghost?â asked Gabe.
